Trend Report: Suede Flats

Belle by Sigerson MorrisonIf you buy only one pair of new shoes this winter, make it suede flats. They’re incredibly versatile. Always comfortable. And, due to the bumper crop of fabulous shoes this season, they are absolutely chic.

Of course, with its richness and texture, suede has always been an ideal material for a winter shoe. What makes this year a particular standout is the sheer variety of colors and styles that are available; add to that the really creative embellishments we’re seeing, and you get a shoe that can hold its own against the heavier fabrics of your winter clothes.

How To Wear Suede Flats

To create the perfect outfit, pair suede flats with:

  • Tahari Michelle - Black suedeTrousers — Suede flats are a great accompaniment to tailored trousers and a great sweater/blouse combination. To avoid looking too starchy, choose flats in a great color (e.g., pair plum flats with gray trousers), or with a stand-out embellishment, like stones. Such a great look for work.
  • Skinny jeans — Think skinny jeans with flats is a look only teenagers can carry off? Think again. If you can carry off skinny jeans, you will look fabulous when you pair them with a really fun pair of suede flats. Or, consider pairing them with a tailored flat, to mix up the look and add enough polish to carry you from the weekend to your professional life.
  • Above-the-knee skirts — Suede flats look great with shorter skirts paired with tights or sheer hose in a complementary color. I love the idea of gray flats in combo with gray hose and a tweedy little skirt. So sophisticated, but with a real hint of fun as well.

Gravati - 3328-512 (Grigio 2106)Some rules of thumb:

  • No below-the-knee skirts: In the name of all that is fashion-conscious, do not pair suede flats (or any flats) with long skirts. Even the most chic flat cannot rescue this look from the realm of schoolmarm.
  • Coordinate tights or hose with your suede flats, to create the longest, leanest line. Black with black, gray with gray, plum with plum: You get the idea.
  • Be bold in your selection: Opt for a color other than black. Go for embellishment. These are not everyday shoes, these shoes can make your outfit. Choose accordingly.
