From amidst the buckles and straps and studs of this past year, a new sort of footwear adornment is peeping its head — and it’s one that allows us to declare (albeit tentatively): Pretty is making a comeback.
The adornment? Delicate beads, and they’re making moccasins, gladiators, caged sandals, and almost every other shoe this spring more feminine, exotic, and yes, even pretty.
Never fear, though: Pretty doesn’t mean boring or invisible or timid; this year’s beaded shoes are completely noticeable, but in a way we haven’t seen for a while. Instead of last year’s in-your-face attitude, we get intricacy; last year’s harsh is now soft; bold becomes nuanced.
No more stomping around; these exotic shoes are for strolling — through the market in Istanbul, or just in your neighborhood.
Despite their exoticism, beaded shoes are quite versatile; they’ll go with just about any look you can conjure up. Just remember that the appeal of these shoes lies in their details. Pick wardrobe elements that highlight and complement these details, rather than overwhelm them.
In fact, Nicole Richie is a great stylistic reference point: her tendency to pair flowy with fitted works perfectly with beaded shoes. (Indeed some of our featured beaded shoes are from her House of Harlow line.)
