A weekend of bopping around in the wrong shoes — where I ended up with sore feet and tired legs — has inspired me to create today’s Wish List of Earth-Friendly Walkabouts, a great selection of 25 shoes that you can put on Saturday morning, and comfortably wear all day, on errand runs, shopping trips, to the gym or yoga, and anywhere else your day takes you.
The shoes on the list are all:
- Easy on and off — Ideal if you’re shopping for clothes, or trying to exit a crowded yoga studio after class.
- Versatile – Available in neutrals or the brighter shades of spring, these shoes will go with all your casual clothes, from shorts and jeans to skirts.
Comfortable – When you’re on your feet all day, doing your weekend errand thing, your feet simply can’t hurt. In these shoes they won’t.
- Cute — These shoes prove you can be comfortable and stylish at the same time. You’ll find giraffe prints, floral details, metallic finishes, and any number of other flourishes in this selection.
Last, but definitely not least, the shoes are all made from earth-friendly materials that — because they’re sturdy, resilient to stains (or washable), and generally less expensive — are ideal for daytime casual shoes.

Who doesn’t love turquoise? No other color is quite as good at conjuring up the image of island vacations, warm sunny seas, and just general bliss.
Makes sense, then, that Pantone has anointed turquoise the color of the year for 2010. And, not surprisingly, we have tons of gorgeous turquoise-hued shoes to choose from this spring, in styles ranging from casual sandals to suede pumps.
Of course, this trend is not concerned with the style of the footwear, rather it’s all about how to use turquoise shoes to really make your outfits stand apart. Turquoise has both warm and cool tones, so it works with just about any color; you’re sure to love it combined with:
- Neutrals: Turquoise adds a welcome punch of color to neutrals. Picture turquoise slingbacks (at right) with a crisp khaki-toned shirt dress. Or, pair turquoise-embellished wedges with casual cropped chinos for the weekend.
Lime green: Turquoise combined with any yellow green is a great combination, really vivid and mod. I love these two-toned flats from Anne Klein, which would work beautifully with white shorts or a white sundress.
- Reds and pinks: Turquoise paired with red is another great combination (which has already been used to great advantage in Marimekko fabrics). Wouldn’t a red pedicure look great with these open-toed turquoise shoes?
- Deep blues: Create a twist on the classic maritime look and pair turquoise shoes with navy or other deep blues. The turquoise provides an unexpected punch of color, and adds a contemporary touch to a traditional look.
